Jane Austen does not show us in Pride and Prejudice how Mr. Darcy spent the night he drafted his lengthy apologia to Elizabeth. With Darcy’s letter, though, Austen gives us a significant glance into his character, both clarifying his behavior and revealing his personality, and with that glance, redeems him in the eyes of many readers.

Not only significant in crystallizing Darcy’s character and propelling the plot of Pride and Prejudice, Darcy’s letter also helps develop the novel’s form and theme, arguably serving as the most important letter of the novel. Pride and Prejudice, which we think was composed originally in in epistolary form, was substantively revised before its publication in

It is believed that Jane Austen may have based her idea of Pemberley on Chatsworth House and written the novel while in Bakewell. Its banks were neither formal, nor falsely adorned. Chatsworth was also mentioned in the novel as one of the estates Elizabeth Bennet visits before arriving at Pemberley.

On your visit, you may recognise the grand staircase and ceiling of the Painted Hall where Lizzie and the Gardiners start their tour of Pemberley. The Sculpture Gallery was used in the scene where Lizzie Bennet sees the bust of Mr Darcy, and his housekeeper describes his many good qualities. On your visit you will also recognise the beautiful veiled Vestal Virgin sculpture from the same scene.

The scene in the Sculpture Gallery was originally set to be in a gallery of paintings, but the scene was changed to make use of Chatsworth’s collection. As a souvenir from the filming, we still have the bust of Mr Darcy, played by Matthew Macfadyen. The bust is made of resin mixed with marble dust and was created by Nick Dutton in as a prop for the film.

It can be found in the Orangery shop, through the Sculpture Gallery. In Jane Austen’s world, the date as we know it didn’t really exist. Thanks to the violently enthusiastic chaperoning of unmarried women during every waking moment of their lives, they were barely allowed to be alone with a single man for an instant until they were suddenly mano a mano in the honeymoon suite. The mind, frankly, boggles. Here in the not-so-new-millennium, we don’t have to face up to this horror, for which we should be devoutly grateful.

But to replace it, we have something else: First Date Horror. And just like the honeymoon suite, it’s just you and the man, eyeball to eyeball, with nobody to hear you scream. My hero … meeting a soul mate can be hard work for the modern-day heroine. Not that you’d want anyone else there: the presence of a third party at a first date is, in almost every situation, a Very Bad Sign.

I know this first hand, because I once went on a date with a bloke who brought his mate along, and to this day I have absolutely no idea what was going on. Was he there to protect the date from my voracious attentions? To signal that the whole thing was in fact not a date at all but some kind of platonic threesome?

To signal his interest in an entirely non-platonic threesome? Who knows? But it was one of the weirdest minute periods of my life.
